I love this article! It's a question posed to Carolyn Hax of the Washington Post by a single gal asking her what do stay at home moms do during the day. Her main question is why do we do in a typical day and why can't we call or email. This woman thinks that kids are an excuse to relax and enjoy. To which Carolyn replies " Relax and enjoy, you're funny!"
And it's true! I have plenty of single friends who ask me why I haven't written them back or called. Or why I haven't been able to get together with them for coffee. My day is insane with things that once took 5 minutes to get done now it takes forever!
When I was single and needed to be somewhere for 9am. I would get up at 8am get ready, have breakfast, gather my things and get to my destination with 15 minutes to spare.
Now try doing that two kids....
Yeah, not going to happen!
I'm up at 6:30 with the kids. Getting breakfast and getting clothes on are mountains in comparison to the molehills I was used to in my pre-baby lifestyle. Instead of just grabbing my coat and getting out the door. It's a fight to get little jackets, shoes and don't get me started on snow gear! Once you get them on, someone needs to have them taken off to go to the bathroom which sets you back another 10 minutes.
Good luck trying to get somewhere on time, with all your gear and sanity in check. I have once or twice where I have forgotten the diaper bag on the front step or lunch on the counter. Let's just be grateful that I didn't leave the kid on the front step.
But what Carolyn says at the end of the letter is very true. Even taking ten minutes to yourself a real friend would understand and wouldn't judge you if they didn't reply to that email or haven't called you in a month.
I'm sure glad I have real friends like that. The ones that no matter how much time goes by we always manage to feel like we hung out the night before. That don't judge my parenting skills and what I do with my time. And the friends who make the time I have with memorable instead of dwelling in the fact that I have been absent.
Keep the true friends, the rest, don't matter!
