MOMVERSATION MONDAYS: When Should Your Child Get a Cell Phone?

Another Monday, another Momversation! And Dana Loesch of Mamalogues is wondering when should your child get a cell phone.

My kids are not going to get a cell phone until they are able to pay for it themselves.

Remember the days when we didn't have cell phones and we needed permission to even go on the phone that was hanging on the wall, you know the one... The only way you could walk around with this phone was if you were looking to get choked by it. To get comfy all you had to do is turn a little to the right to sit on the "telephone chair", it's sole purpose was to provide comfort for the person on the phone.

I don't know why my kids would need them unless they need to get a hold of me for a drive or any other type of emergency.
They will probably end up using one of ours until they can afford their own, but they won't be getting a hold of my phone until they are sixteen. That seems reasonable, it's around that time where they are getting their license and they would need to have a way to get a hold of me.

Other than that, they can wait until they can afford one of their own. Those things are expensive and I don't need another bill thank you!

What do you think?

I agree, I won't let my child have a cell phone until he can pay for it. I don't think a 10 year old really needs a cell phone.

I'm a little torn on the situation. I'd love for him to have one when he's older, just in case, but I'm not sure how well he'll handle the responsibility.

It's a great idea to wait until they can pay for it, but I think I'll get one of the pay as you go phones and make him get the minutes with his allowance. We've got along way to go though until I even consider him getting a phone!

I agree...I don't want to have to fork out for 1000 texts or whatever they end up doing with it.

The part you wrote about the old phones on the wall and having to ask for permission was so funny and very true lol.

I know parents here whose kids are like 9 and have cell phones. My daughter is a good kid but I just dont trust her to not lose the phone @ 10 years old.

hi vanessa,
hope you are having a wonderful labor day! cell phones are an interesting discussion! i think if you give middle school kids a phone it should be just for emergencies and maybe the kind you preload with a few minutes so they use it just for that and NOTHING else! LOL my oldest was in middle school on september 11th and before all the cells went out we were able to get intouch with her and let her know we were coming to pick her up and we were ok, so that is when cells are good but other than that you are right unless they can pay for all of the "texts" that they are going to do forget it! cuz it is the texts that they do, they don't sit and "chat" on the phones like we used to on the old corded phones like you were talking about, ya remember them, attached to our shoulders and then attached into the wall therefore we were HOME! LOL
keep smiling!
