That's right! No doctor. My doctor left, leaving NO REPLACEMENT for his patients and now we are forced to go to the clinic or the hospital to get any kind of medical care.
Both the clinic and the hospital are 35 minutes away from me. And I refuse to go to the clinic, because (wait for the sarcasm...) after the amazing care they give you wind up in the hospital with worse symptoms than before.
I'm amazed of the health care we have in our country. It's appalling! When my husband and I got our first posting here, I put myself on a waiting list and got lucky enough to get a doctor. Others who have been here for years still don't. Now I'm back on one.
Not only that, when I needed to see the doctor I got a nurse. So why can't they see me now?
And now I got some nice little information from a new "friend" Pharmacist, I will call him Pharmy.
Pharmy has told me that the Ottawa Heath Board doesn't like bringing in new physicians to the province because they want keep their numbers low so it's bucks in their pockets at the end of the year. Meaning a doctor in Edmonton has no chance of working here because our government is greedy! Leaving us to fend for ouselves.
OH and get this! Another piece of information you might not know and something I was amazed to hear from Pharmy. The Government as REMOVED Tamiflu from the drugstore because they are now working with manufacturers of the new H1N1 flu shot. Several people have come in looking for the Tamiflu shot and Phamy had nothing to give. Leaving our town pretty much screwed.
Now coming from someone who has experienced health care in various parts of the world. I got better health care in PANAMA than I do here in Canada!
Why is that?
Please tell me if I'm wrong here....

6 witnessing the mayhem:
That is pretty outragous. I am sorry that you have to deal with that BS!
I'd be mad to, if my closest doctor was 35 mins away!
I thought socialized healthcare rocked? At least that's what our govt keeps telling us, they keep saying "look at the canadians, look how good they have it." apparetnly they haven't talked to you!
our drs office (we go to the hospital/clinic on base) is about 45 min aaway and it is a pain to drag the kids down there.
and this is what our nation is trying to go to in the US free healthcare, so that we have all these issues as well-and here in the US I am sure it will be worse, as our government seems to be more on the corrupt side lately.
But every situation in this instance can be the same with paid healthcare. My provider has changed several times, and I drive 45 minutes away by choice to get the provider I want although there are about 150 other providers here in my area closer, but I love my doctor but if he leaves, I will get another one close by.
since we are under the military's healthcare, tricare--its not so bad. I can't complain about the cost as it is so low for us, it is basically free, but I can complain about the care I get if it sucks or its inadequate and right now I get to essentially "shop around for providers" so I am happy. I just don't want to be funnelled into a healthcare system that takes away my right to choose someone or be with a provider that I want to be with that can see me when I need to get in there before my health gets worse.
Right now, I dont have to wait hours in an ER or at Urgent care, I can go straight to my doctor and he will see me right away...and if I happen to have an emergency I have only waited an average about 15 minutes and upwards to 45 minutes(the longest ever for us) in the ER ever-which is amazing, everywhere we have been, so we must be lucky because my friends who are also military spouses have horror stories about being in the ER for upwards of 8 hours each time, but I can't share those sentiments yet.
This is my worry and concern if we go to a nationalized system. Longer waits, longer time to get an appointment, longer everything and less quality care due to lack of doctors/healthcare professionals--my girlfriend who I went to school with is a doctor in PA and she said she will close up her profession if we go national, she said its not worth it for her financially to continue to practice medicine...and she isn't even greedy she is just so in debt over student loans to finish college and get her degree that she said she will just retire early because its already hard enough to get payment from people for her services, right now she says the private insurance of other people helps pay for the catistrophic gap that is caused by the loss, and she has to carry malpractice insurance so that is a pretty penny she has to spend, not to mention all that schooling she has done,... the cost she has spent she said would not be beneficial or even enough for her to barely survive for her to continue to practice if the government doesn't allow a private option as well.
It's weighing heavy on alot of healthcare professionals here in the US. I hope whatever we do decide comes out to be good all around for everyone.
We use Tamiflu for puppies with Parvo virus... It works great!
I agree with you...all about $money$ and will always be.
You having children I'd be panicky too. I'm so sorry sweetie.
Healthcare in the US stinks.
In Australia there is a doctors surgery in nearly every shopping centre and corner and the government picks up the tab in most cases.
I know exactly how you feel. We were without a doctor for 4 years in Montreal!
Now we're back in Ontario and we have a family doctor but we're due to be posted in less than 2 years so we'll be back searching again in whatever town we move to.
