I was horrified by the premier of his new show where he is trying to help North Americans develop healthy eating habits.
It got me thinking of the things I do at home. Funny thing is, my mother has been trying to get me to change since my son was 18 months.
As I look back on the things my family has eaten this week, there was not one vegetable on their plate, not one thing that didn't come out of a box and not one thing that didn't have some kind of sugar or some kind of trans fat.
In fact, we ordered pizza for dinner tonight because we didn't plan ahead of time to make something and that was just the simple thing to do.
But is simple the best way to go? After watching the show, that pizza I was so willing to ingest is now turning in my stomach. I am making my kids unhealthy because of convenience. I'm also not giving my kids credit. I don't give them things because I don't want to fight with them about what's on their plate.
I need to change.
I'm not a bad parent, I just need to fix the food problem that has become an epidemic in the world.
So here is my challenge for the week:
All the meals that my family eats are going to be made with fresh ingredients.Vegetables and fruits (which aren't a big problem here, they love fruits) will be readily available for snacks and as a part of main meals.
Fruit juices are going to be cut down dramatically, milk and water will be substituted.
30 minutes of daily activity will be made a priority for everyone in the family.
Am I going overboard? I don't think so. Diabetes is high on my husband's side and precautions should have been taken years ago when my mother was lecturing me. But of course, I didn't listen.
If you join me on this, great! Let me know what you are doing to change your family habits. You don't have to go to the extreme, baby steps are a great way to start. Obesity is one the greatest killer of people in America and Canada and it's the ONLY disease that is preventable AND reversible.

4 witnessing the mayhem:
Our family menu is just okay. I home make dinner 3-4 nights a week, and cereal is usually breakfast. Our BIG issue are the snacks. So.... I have decided to change out all the unhealthy snacks for healthy ones, i.e. fruit, veggies and dip, yogurt, cheese, ect. I think this will be a good first baby step. not too hard for me and I hope not too hard for the kids either.
our family is going to start with eating healthy snacks instead of unhealthy ones. fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt, ect. This is all going to be instead of chips, cookies, candy, ect. At least its a start. Hopefully it goes well:)
I didn't make it up late enough to watch it (an hour later here) but I love Jamie Oliver and his cooking. So true to everything you said! I don't think you're going overboard at all. Ethan won't eat veggies so I get him the V8 Fussion juice where the veggies are hidden. I also cut his juice with water to get more of that in him!
OUTSTANDING!!! We(American) can learn alot from Jamie Oliver. Look @ us, it is all about convenience now, our children don’t know anything about fruits, veggies. That is sad. If we start in the schools then they can bring their knowledge home & educate the parents. School is the one place kids eat everyday. Not sure why everyone is so against this man, he is trying to help get our kids healthy since we won’t. He is trying to help & someone needs to have a talk with Allison, all she knows to say is the 1st ingredient. If it’s chicken then why would there be any other ingredients? I am glad that he is trying to make America aware & we should stand behind him. The comment he was accused of making “americans being ignorant” whether he said it or not, it’s true & that’s why everyone was so upset because they didn’t want to admit it.
I support Jamie Oliver 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
